Unity's Basic Teachings

God is all good and active in everything, everywhere.

There is only one presence and power in the universe, God. God has many attributes: Absolute Good, Love, Light, Creator, Father, Mother, Principle, Law, Source, Substance, Omnipotence, Omnipresence, Omniscience.

"Hear, O Israel: The LORD is our God, the LORD alone." - Deuteronomy 6:4

I am naturally good because God's Divinity is in me and in everyone.

Human beings are born with original divinity, not original sin.  We are spiritual beings first and foremost, God's most prized creation.  We may forget this truth and ignore our spiritual selves--however, this does not change who we are. The Christ Spirit, the anointing of God in us, is our higher self.

Then God said, "Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness"...So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. - Genesis 1:26,27

I create my experiences by what I choose to think and what I feel and believe.

There is a poetic saying to help remember this concept: Thoughts held in mind produce after their kind.  It is the principle of cause and effect applied to the mind and human experience – the Principle of Mind Action.  What we think about all day helps to create our world, thus making us responsible for our own experience.  Not everyone is ready to accept this responsibility. Many would rather blame someone or something for their experience.  However, in accepting responsibility, we open ourselves up to the universal law that can help us change our circumstances for the better.

For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he. - Proverbs 23:7.

Through affirmative prayer and meditation, I connect with God and bring out the good in my life.

A positive life is achieved through regular prayer and meditation, releasing negative thoughts and beliefs, affirming the good, and endeavoring to make every thought, word, and action live up to the Christ standard.  It doesn't mean that we are 100% successful at this, just that we are working on ourselves to the best of our understanding and ability.

It is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles." - Matthew 15:11.

I do and give my best by living the Truth I know. I make a difference!

Understanding the Principle of Mind Action, we cooperate with it by paying close attention to the quality and nature of our thinking, our consciousness. We live 95% of our lives in our minds, and only about 5% in our physical bodies (more if we exercise regularly). Given that we spend so much time in the mental realm, it behooves us to keep our thought positive, healthy, and prosperous.

Thoughts are very much like tools. They help us to shape and form the quality of our lives.  Put these things into practice, devote yourself to them, so that all may see your progress. - I Timothy 4:15.

The Bible is a spiritual handbook.

In Unity, the Bible is considered inspired writing, not the absolute, literal Word of God.  The Bible is a complex collection of writings compiled over many centuries containing valuable spiritual ideas.  The Bible can be understood through various interpretive mental lenses, including: factual, religious history, dramatic, comedic, literary, moral, allegorical, prophetic, and metaphysical.  Unity is known for its metaphysical interpretation of the Bible.

This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth; you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to act in accordance with all that is written in it.  For then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall be successful. - Joshua 1:8.

Jesus Christ is a Master Teacher, Wayshower, and an example of what is possible for all people.

Many metaphysical Christians refer to Jesus by these names, and less so by the more traditional Savior, Lord, Christ, etc.  Unity focuses on Jesus' teachings as the way to overcome our shortcomings and life challenges. The Christ Spirit is understood as the spiritual identity of every human being, although it was most greatly expressed through Jesus.

Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these. - John 14:12.
